Alright, but just to warn you: I may have gotten it mixed up with one of Adam Savage's in all the reality-swapping going on. I've been getting strange nightmares about a smartass man in a beret I can't explain any other way.
Well, I'm currently in the USA and talking about their Memorial Day, so there's your "our." As for which war, I'm really talking about both. Afghanistan at this point just has troops there to make it look like we haven't given up searching for Bin Laden (which we have), and the country is collapsing even faster than Iraq. Iraq I don't really have to talk about, as you've heard it all in the news.
Both wars are pointless, both are dangerous, and in both cases it's probably best for all concerned if we just withdraw. Yes, things will go chaotic, but by staying there we're just letting them blame Americans for the chaos. It's my hope that if we're gone, they'll have to face the reality that it's their own religious idiocy causing it, and maybe they'll do something about it. Change generally has to come from within, you can't force it on a people who don't want to change.
I respect you opinion and enjoy your blog. But I would like some more clarification on the use of the terms "dangerous" (although it seems self evident) and "pointless" when referring to the state of our present conflict.
From my experience, there is a real and pressing threat from militant Islamists. They have taken refuge among the remains of failed states, funded from oil rich states and built their legitimacy through the provision of "humanitarian" services to the local populace.
Our conflict truly is about a world in which freedom and equality are valued as a right and not trumped by any ideology, philosophy or religion.
Dangerous - I really only meant it in the self-evident way. Soldiers are getting killed over there, 'nuff said.
Pointless - This one's a bit more subtle. What I actually mean here is that I believe that the US staying over there is doing more harm than good (or at the very least is doing no more harm than leaving would). I roughly outlined this in my previous comment; it seems to me that America being there is just giving them something else to hate America for.

You forget, Infophile, that the only way to support the troops is to support the administration that is causing their deaths.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!
Can I have yours, too?

Which "our"? You've already explained the way you split your years between the USA and Canada. Which war? Iraq, Afghanistan, or both?
